Site Preparation & Spacing• Weed Control: Clear or spray a 1-metre circle around each planting site. Weeds steal the moisture your new plants need.• Hedge or Windbreak Spacing: Plant them 1 to 1.5 metres apart in a line.• Livestock Forage Spacing: Plant rows 2.5 to 3 metres apart, with plants spaced 1.5 to 2 metres apart within the row.2. Digging the Hole• Dig your hole twice as wide as the tube pot, and just a bit deeper.• If your soil is heavy clay, scratch the inside walls of the hole with your spade so the roots can break through easily.3. Planting the Tube• Soak First: Dunk the plastic tube into a bucket of water until bubbles stop before taking the plant out.• Unpotting: Gently squeeze the sides of the tube and slide the plant out. Don't yank it by the stem.• Depth: Plant it so the top of the tube soil sits level with or slightly below the ground. Make a small dirt dish around the base to catch future rain.• Fill: Pack the loose soil back around the plant and press down gently with your hands to get rid of air pockets.4. Watering & Establishment• Give each plant 2 to 5 litres of water immediately after planting to settle the soil.• Spring Advantage: Planting right now uses the excellent spring subsoil moisture, giving roots a massive head start before summer.• First Summer: Once established, Saltbush is incredibly drought-hardy. However, give them a good deep drink every 2–3 weeks during their very first summer if it gets exceptionally dry.5. Protection & Pruning• Guards: Use tree guards if rabbits, hares, or roos are active on your block.• Pruning: After the first year, cut or lightly graze the tops.
